Love: It’s Not Just a Feeling…It’s Also a Verb

From Natasha Crawford
The Marriage Acadamy
http://www.natashacrawford.com/

The following is an article from the June newsletter
********************************************************

I love you.

It’s one of the most meaningful and vague sentences in American culture. When it comes to your marriage, you promise to love “’til death do us part.” Notice that in the previous sentence, love is a verb. This has nothing to do with that warm, fuzzy feeling you get. It has everything to do with what you do. Each partner in a marriage has to take responsibility for adding love into the relationship. Simple? Yes. Easy? Not always.

There are many small ways you can act lovingly towards your spouse. Here are just a few to get you started:
- Give a compliment (on a new outfit, his smile, her intelligence, being a good parent, etc.)
- Take out the trash
- Cook his/her favorite meal
- Buy a slice of his/her favorite dessert
- Give a massage (without the expectation of sex to follow, but if it does – BONUS!)
- Take a walk or go to the gym together
- Send a love letter/email/text message
You’ll notice that none of these require lots of time or money. Most acts of love are like that. It really is the small things that matter (I know it’s cliché, but it’s true). Be creative. Don’t be afraid to think out the box.

As the receiver of love please, please, please, make it easy for your partner. Tell her what works for you. If she’s constantly buying you jewelry and all you really want is a foot massage after a long day at work, she’s wasting money and you’re not getting your needs met. No one wins. Ask for what you want. She is not a mind reader. And none of that “hinting” either. Be clear. Be honest. Be specific.

A successful marriage, like a well-run car, requires maintenance. Find out the type of “maintenance” your partner requires and be diligent in expressing love for him/her in that way. The return on your investment will be well worth it. Try asking this question – Honey, other than sex, which ways would you prefer I express my love for you? Take note of the answers. Then do it!

For more thoughts on how to infuse acts of love into your relationship, check out The Five Love Languages, by Gary Chapman.. If you don’t have time, I’ll be reviewing it in the next newsletter.

*My use of any particular pronoun is solely due to my annoyance with “he/she” and “his/her”

From AAWP: Beware! The Wedding-Day Daze Syndrome!

Hi AAWPs:

“The Wedding-Day-Daze Syndrome” is sweeping the country, afflicting about 90% of today’s brides and grooms! It’s a syndrome that you need to be aware of.

Here’s the scenario: You’re invited to a wedding that’s a nightmare. You wait in line an hour to get a drink at the cocktail hour. You wait an hour between courses and are starving. The best man gives a speech that’s so long and boring, that friends and family have put their heads on the guest tables and you can barely hear him above their snores J.

The bride and groom, however, are oblivious. They’re having a great time not knowing that their guests are about to stage a revolution and bolt for the door.

This just-married couple has been struck by the Wedding-Day Daze Syndrome!

They were so caught up in themselves and “their” day that they didn’t realize that their wedding, the one they paid thousands of dollars for was far from the perfect fantasy.

There are, however, solutions to this problem. One, you can hire a wedding consultant. Or two, you can appoint a “wedding-day guardian”.

A wedding-day guardian is a friend or family member who knows you well enough to oversee the affair, one who’s intelligent enough to recognize trouble, and one who is strong enough to address the problem and correct it, on the spot.

Before the wedding, take your guardian to your catering property. Introduce them to the catering director, and to the captain or maitre D’ who will be overseeing your wedding. Explain to these people that they will answer to the guardian at the reception. And then…

Go ahead and enjoy your Wedding-Day Daze! Have a great time, knowing that your guardian is there to see that everything runs smoothly, guaranteeing that your wedding day will turn into the fantasy you’ve always imagined, not only for yourself, but your treasured family and friends.

Happy Wedding Planning!

The Business of Being a Mother

I got this from a sista friend and I thought that I would share. I just changed the actual years that I have held the Mom position LOL…Enjoy!

Being a mother is no easy task – it’s filled with challenges. As I reflect on this position that I have held for the past 20 years I realize that I have every right to run for the president of the United States of America if not the world.

Culinary Expert
I have fed the kids when they have declared there is nothing there to eat -miraculously I managed to whip up meals without leaving the house.

Office of Administration
Time management – scheduling various appointments, parties, attending recitals and other related events while maintaining my own.
Reviewing papers, filling out forms, signing permission slips, attend meetings.

Advocate
I have served as a strong advocate on behalf of their education.

Domestic Policy/Homeland Security
I have successfully mediated and at times end major wars.

Event Planner
Slumber Parties, Birthday Parties, Museum Trips, Broadway Shows, Amusement Parks, Vacation/Traveling Abroad, After Christmas Shopping, Concerts and more.

Economic Council/Adviser
I have had to balance budgets with next to nothing left

Health Care
Office of Drug Control
I have experience in taking care of the sick children bringing them back to health without having to run to the emergency room and calming their hysterics at the sight of blood when they merely have a bruise.

Official Spiritual Adviser
Very close connection to God for the ultimate guide that I do not mess up this position.

Office of Mental Health
Listen to the constant reasons why the other person is stupid
Listen and counsel on having compassion, the importance of caring, being kind, and knowing when it’s time to hit back

Education/Guidance Counselor
Selecting the appropriate educational materials/courses/path/programs
Filling out Financial Aid Forms for College

I can go on and on with the other duties but it may appear to be bragging. Well, I wont be running for anything as being a mother is a life term position and that’s a major position that I wont trade for anything.
I must go and celebrate this day although I am still on full duty…………..

From AAWP: Why Do Brides Wear White?

Hello AAWPs:

We have a fun question for you this week. Why do brides wear white? We know that white symbolizes purity and virginitybut what’s the real reason?

The answer dates back to 1840 when Victoria, Queen of England, married her Prince Charming, Albert, in a wedding that set protocol on its ear.

The young Queen was only 20 when SHE proposed marriage to Albert. According to the Royal Marriages Act of 1772, all royal marriages were to be sanctioned by the sovereign but in Victoria’s case, she was the sovereign and this independent young woman was not about to ask anyone’s permission to marrya royal first.

The young queen married publicly, in the afternoon, and set another royal precedent. Since weddings were considered too sacred for the public’s eyes, they were always held very late at night or early in the morning. And, to top it off, she wore a wedding dress with a plunging, SEXY necklinea dress that would change the course of history. Victoria, instead of wearing silver, the traditional choice for royalty, wore WHITE. It was a first, and the beginning of a tradition that has passed down to us throughout the ages.

But how did the color become synonymous with purity and virginity? In the sixteenth century, another English queen, Elizabeth I, popularized the color white; she LOVED IT and wore it often! Because the queen was celebrated for her chasteness (she became known as the Virgin Queen), her favorite color came to symbolize purity and virginityand the tradition passed down to us throughout the centuries.

Today white symbolizes joy and celebration and remains the traditional color for wedding gowns. But there’s no reason not to wear any color that you choose.

Happy Wedding Planning!
